What Caused the Feud Between Robbie Williams and Oasis?

Robbie Williams is currently in the limelight for praising The 1975's Matty Healy for being the only exception to the music industry not being boring, which is a very hot take in itself, so I thought today we could have a look at the time Robbie Williams called out Oasis and had quite a feud with Liam Gallagher.

After Robbie left Take That in 1995, it turns out, the Oasis brothers and Robbie were actually friends! They were seen playing charity football and going to Glastonbury together, before Noel publicly called him the “fat dancer from Take That”, and that's where the feud all began. Robbie called Noel a “mean-spirited nasty little dwarf”, and you have to give it to him – that is an amazing jibe.

A year later, Robbie sold out Knebworth Park three nights in a row, and if you know anything about Oasis, it was that they famously sold out two nights at the same stadium. Taunting Noel, its alleged that Robbie sent tap dancing shoes to him, with a note that read “Dear Mr N Gallagher, you said two nights at Knebworth is history. Well, I guess three is just greedy. Yours, Rob.

“PS: Finding it difficult to find adequate support for my show. What are you doing on the 1st and 2nd? oh and the 3rd? Yours, Rob.”

After finding out that Liam was dating his own ex-girlfriend, Nicole Appleton, Robbie took to the stage at the 2000’s Brit Awards, where he offered out Gallagher to a boxing match, that would be televised for everyone to see. That year also, Williams took to sending the brothers a funeral wreath when their fourth studio album ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ well and truly flopped.

Perhaps the greatest of all punches, Liam ended up marrying Appleton, and ended up having a child with her too, before their divorce in 2014.

Throughout the years, Robbie continued to make sly digs at the Gallagher brothers, including taking to the stage and saying that Noel can kiss his “perfectly formed backside”, which honestly made me want to vomit the second I saw the video.

In an interview with Zane Lowe in 2022, he called the band ‘gigantic bullies’ to everyone in the music industry, noting that he doesn’t like bullies. However, he also said that he was a huge fan of the band and always was.

In classic Liam fashion, he took to Twitter to address what he had said, writing that he’d “never bullied anyone in his life, [he’s] a massive piss taker for sure and probably gone a little too far sometimes, but if I've ever hurt anyone's feelings I apologise.” Which is actually a very coherent and straight forward tweet from him to be fair.

Overall, Robbie is very keen at kicking up a fuss, and has had feuds with several people and bands throughout his career - perhaps at a jab to stay in the headlines, or maybe he believes airing out his laundry to the world is the best way to be the bigger person, or maybe both.
