In 2008, The Grammy’s celebrated their 50th awards ceremony, and perhaps it was most notable for Amy Winehouse winning 5 awards, and for giving us this iconic moment of her winning Record of the Year.
From her reaction, to her acceptance speech, to the crowd cheering her on - it's one of the sweetest moments in modern music history. Amy was up against Beyonce, Foo Fighters, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake to win this award – a very very exciting time in music!
But she wasn’t actually in person at the Los Angeles ceremony, and instead was streamed via satellite from London’s Riverside Studios, with her friends and family making up the crowd you seen in the clip.
Amy couldn’t attend the Grammy's due to past drug offenses in the UK, meaning the US border denied her of a works visa. She’d even entered rehab a couple weeks before especially to make the Grammy’s in person, but the logistics just weren’t there. However, producer Ken Ehrlich made a special exception just for her since she was predicted to win so many awards that night.
However, Amy Winehouse shouldn't be remembered for her substance issues - she was so much more than that and deserves to be remembered for her voice, performance, and artistry instead.
In her acceptance speech, she thanks her parents, her partner Blake, and paid homage to London, citing that ‘Camden town ain’t burning down’, whilst her mother gleams with joy under her arm. She also did a cracking performance of ‘You Know I’m no good’ and ‘Rehab’ that night, of which she also won single of the year and best female pop vocal performance for.

Amy was more made up with Tony Bennett presenting the award to her than anything else, she was a huge fan of his and he had a massive influence on her and her work – it must have felt so surreal for her. Bennett was best known for his jazz swing style and was awarded a huge accolade of awards within his career, including 20 Grammy's and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Overall, the night was a total success for Amy and her team. Let us remember her for that.
